Frequently Asked Questions
1. When are decisions made regarding admissions?
Depends on which semester you are applying for. For
fall, students start receiving admission letters as early as March and
admissions continue until late June. A word of advice is 'apply as early as
possi ble'.
MAKE SURE YOUR ADMISSION FILE IS COMPLETE. THE BASIC REQUIREMENTS ARE ADMISSION
FORM DETAILS, TRANSCRIPTS, FINANCIAL STATEMENT AND OFFICIAL TOEFL SCORE.
ONLY AFTER receiving these, will your packet (Transcripts, GRE score, Letter of
Recommendation, Statement of Purpose, Resume, etc) be forwarded to the
respective department.
2. Oops, I have got some pre-requisite courses which I think I have already done!!..
Usually students do not enclose a description of the
courses, which they have or will be taking. It is very difficult for the
graduate admissions committee to know what you have covered by simply looking
at the course headings (since names differ)
SO PLEASE SEND SYLLABUS/CURRICULUM DETAILS ALONG WITH YOUR APPLICATION PACKETS.
If you have not done that so far, and have been given pre-requisites , you may
try to waive them by sending a letter attested by your college/university
stating that you have covered the necessary topics/subject under so and so
course name...
3. What are my chances for financial aid..?
It usually varies from department to department. Your best bet is to get in touch with the faculty/st udents currently in your department and ask them this question.
4. In what forms is financial aid available?
Below mentioned two most frequent forms of scholarship
are available. Other forms are usually for Ph.D. students who are usually
offered complete financial aid and thus may not be interested in this question
J!!
Teaching/Research Assistantship - This is awarded on a per semester
basis only. This means that you may have this assistantship for one semester
but there is no guarantee that you will be awarded the same next semester again
but the chances are usually less in this regard. With this assistantship, you
usually get 2 course tuition fees waived and have to pay the instate fees for
the rest of the courses you enroll for that semester.
Graduate Assistantship - These assistantships are awarded by other departments in the campus.
5. What is the on campus job scenario? Pay.etc.
Most of the students have managed to get an on campus job like working at the library, computer labs, interns in other departments, etc. These jobs pay around $6.25 to $9 per hour and you are not allowed to work for more than 20 hours per week. These positions are filled up soon as many international students compete for them.Latest job openings are posted here.
6. Do you have to pay the full fee when you join? What amount of money do you need to bring to see you through the first two three months?
The tution & fees, is in general in the range of $5500- $6000 bucks per sem.For the exact amount of tution & fees, please get in touch with your department.. Note that this amount will vary with your academic unit (school, department) and the number of credit hours you may enroll in a semester. Fees can be paid in upto 2-3 installments.
You may need in the range of about $1000-$2000 (other than any amount for tuition & fees) for your initial expenses. Not that you may end up spending all of it but it may be safer to have that much at least as there will be initial expenses on apartment deposit and rent, food, utility bills, etc. Remember that this amount is highly dependent on accomodation needs & life style (sharing apartment, groceries, utility bills, etc.)
7. Whom to contact in my dept/school?
Visit 'Important Information..'.
8. I would need a room to stay. Is there any way you can guide to book one before hand so that I don't have a problem when I get there?
Usually students share apartments with other students and this helps in reducing the r ent costs. So it is best to decide your roommates once you come here. And you need to be physically present to do the required paper work and thus is not possible to book a room before you come over.
9. Are there any students from my city who are joining in the fall of 99; could you mail me their email address or their phone nos.?
We shall provide a link to this information as and when we are informed regarding the students admitted to UNL along with their contact addresses and you may use this information.
10. When should I arrive on cam pus?
Around 10-15 days before college begins is a good time if you do not have financial aid so that you may look around campus for some on campus jobs as well as meet your professors personally to explore any opportunity which may arise anytime. Usually teaching assistantships are awarded depending on enrolment and this is only clear when the semester is about to begin.
11. Do you need to produce all (including your degree) certificates when you reach the Univ. nNt then by what time are you expected to do so?
Original Degree certificate and Medical check-up (Immunization, etc. as mentioned in the application material) proof are required. In case you will be receiving your degree certificate later, you are allowed to submit it within two semesters of joining.
12. Can I defer my admission?
Yes you can. Inform your department (administrative person in-charge) regarding this and they will provide more information in this regard.
13. What if I decide not to join UNL?
Inform your department (administrative person in-charge) in this regard and you may be asked to return your I-20. It is courteous to inform that you will not be joining since another deserving student may be offered the financial aid that was offered to you.
14. What books do I need?
Contact some one in your school/ department as they will be better able to answer this.
